BURIED LONG, LONG AGO #1 review – Who doesn’t like a good scary nursery rhyme? (Cleveland, Cormack, Birch) Mad Cave Studios

Writer: Anthony Cleveland
Artist: Alex Cormack
Letterer: Justin Birch

Thanks to Mad Cave Studios for the review copy!

A new horror series from Mad Cave centered around the true events of the Belle Gunness murders at her family farm in the early 1900’s. In this fictional retelling, Belle’s children begin to suspect something sinister is happening around the farm. They begin to uncover and witness the many horrors that are taking place but something even more evil than their mom may be afoot at the farm.

I really enjoyed this debut issue of Buried Long, Long Ago. The fact that it holds some historical relevance only adds to the mystique and horror surrounding this book. I love what the creative team did here. They took what you might typically see on a documentary on A&E or Discovery and then put their own little fictional twist on it to bring the story into the 21st century. It starts out as a fairy tale or fable before we learn this is just a story being read by the oldest sister to her younger siblings on their journey home to rejoin their mother and her new husband. When we finally meet their mother is when we start to draw parallels between her and the awful ogress in the fairytale they had been reading prior. But, is it just coincidence the mother happens to be a lot like the ogress in the story or is there something more murderous than her really lurking in the ground below their feet?? There is really a lot going on in this wonderful debut issue from Cleveland and team! They’ve added so much depth and intrigue to the story with the combined storylines and I can’t wait to see how they bring this all together. The art, coloring, and lettering are all on point and the book has a really gorgeously stylized and antique look about it. Who doesn’t like a good scary nursery rhyme? It looks a lot like what we are getting here in some fashion to say the least. This book is definitely unique and I highly recommend taking a chance and adding it to your pull list ASAP. Whether you are into horror, history, or just like a good old fashion fairytale. This hits all the marks!

My rating – 9/10 Great!
