Thanks to Mad Cave Studios for the review copy!

The storied Private Investigator in yellow is back for another exciting chapter in Mad Cave’s new series written by the superstar team of Alex Segura (Secret Identity) and Michael Moreci (Barbaric, Queen of Swords).

I have to admit I hadn’t read any prior iterations of Dick Tracy. Not because I wasn’t interested. I just had so many other things I was reading at the time that it just never made it into my reading list. With that being said, I was always curious about the character and I was a big fan of the movie. I’m so glad I decided to jump on with this relaunch from Mad Cave. Especially given the exciting creative team they assembled for this project. The first issue serves as a great introduction to fans new and old. Our titular main character, back on a new case that’s left the police department stifled. However, this case seems more personal than ever as not only is Dick Tracy on the hunt for a killer or killers but he’s now being targeted himself. It’s a charged story that the writers develop with both an old school and modern approach. It’s tense, riveting and smartly written. The art, colors, and lettering shine as well giving the story that trade-mark Dick Tracy look and design. The colors and detail are rich and layered. It’s a beautifully drawn issue highlighted by the lighting, bold blacks and crisp outlines. I love the use of shadows as well. They add so much depth and intrigue. Each page is filled from top to bottom with dialogue and art. There is no empty space here to be found. Excellent work by the creative team! Overall, it’s a great first issue that breathes fresh life into a longtime favorite and I look forward to checking out the next issue.

My rating – 9/10 Great!!
