Movie Length: 2 hours 21 minutes

Dan’s thoughts: Going into the movie I knew very little except for the fact that there would be lots of action scenes involving cars and other vehicles doing things that seemingly defy laws of physics and gravity. In that sense, the movie did not disappoint.

Once the groundwork for the story gets laid with Dante Reyes (Jason Momoa in a role you can tell he had fun with) seeking revenge for the Fast crew killing his father, the movie is a non-stop action movie that spans multiple countries.

As to be expected for this franchise, the action scenes are terrific (and would make Michael Bay happy with the amount of explosions and damage caused). The movie is just under 2.5 hours which I thought was a bit long, but it does flow pretty well. The movie does end on a cliffhanger which helps set up the next movie in the franchise which is currently scheduled to be released sometime in 2025.

Dan’s score: B. It is a fast paced, action movie, but parts of it made little sense to me as to why they happened/what they are doing. The summer movie season is here, and this is a great movie to see in a theater with good AC to get away from real life for 2.5 hours or so.

Darren’s thoughts: Fast and Furious movies are like comfort food at your favorite local restaurant. You pretty much know what you are going to get, but you keep going back because you always have a decent time when you go there. If you like the over the top action sequences and characters in the earlier installments, odds are you’ll have a good time in Fast X.

If you only saw the first Fast and Furious movie you’d be excused for being completely and totally confused if the next movie in the series you saw was Fast X. Wait, they’re spies now? Who is this character? Didn’t that character die? The plot, like the physics of the action sequences and the ability to seemingly teleport all over the world, is completely ridiculous, but if you can suspend disbelief and let it all wash over you, it is a lot of fun.

After ten movies (and a spinoff), it’s hard to truly innovate (I mean, they freakin’ went to space in a rocket car last movie), but there are some standout chase and action sequences. What makes Fast X truly a fun ride is the bad guy. Jason Momoa (Aquaman) chews scenery and is clearly having fun with his role. His over the top performance reminded me of John Travolta and Nicholas Cage acting as each other in Face/Off (1997).

Is Fast X a great movie? No. But it is a fun ride. If you like Fast and Furious movies and the idea of basically watching a nonstop action sequence for two hours appeals to you, you’ll like this movie. One note – the movie ends on a big cliffhanger, so be prepared to wait for the next movie.

Here is my Through the Lens podcast version of this review:

Darren’s Score: A- for delivering a fun ride that makes the 2 ½ hour run time feel like 15 minutes.
