Final Thoughts before the end of Jujutsu Kaisen

The Jujutsu Kaisen manga started coming out in 2018, and really took off during COVID. I still remember going to the bookstore to stock up on manga and seeing the series completely sold out. Now, seven years later we are days away from the final chapter coming out on Sunday (the leaks are most likely out by the time this article is published). But I wanted to write this article before seeing anything about the end, I’m curious to see if my thoughts will change after reading the final chapter (and if any of my predictions are right). I’m fully planning to do a special extra article that covers the last chapter and any news that follows it from Gege, once the official translation drops.

This series was a different start for me, normally I read a series before watching it. This one though, my best friend pulled me into watching the anime first since we couldn’t see each other during quarantine, and watched online together. I can still hear her shouting “look at this white haired man! He’s so HOT!!”  After laughing my ass off, I was hooked on the show (and no it was not just because Gojo is a crazy hot character).

Although I have loved this series, the luster it first had has worn off during the second to last arc in the series, The Culling Games. I got so lost and spent a lot of time re-reading and watching some YouTube breakdowns as to why I should care about The Culling Games and about the power scaling going on. I’m not ashamed to admit that there have been so many times since the start of this arc it has been hard to follow the story and what the hell is even going on in it. Even the final arc with the big battle against Sukuna, in which a whole lot of nothing really happened (and when something did, it was stupid). Sorry, I have a lot of bottled up feelings that I need to get out before the final chapter drops (my current wait time for the leaks is 30 mins as I’m writing this).

Anyways, the finale battle wasn’t all that I thought it would or could be. I really thought Sukuna would go bigger and kill more than three people in his final form, as well as Kenjaku and Gojo. Though, I really never thought Gojo would lose like he did, becoming disconnected from his waist and then losing his brain. My god, was that one of the worst things Gege has done in this series, other than killing off Gojo (but that I understood, just not the brain swap). I mean putting Yuta in Gojo?! That was what made me want to give up on this series, and not because I was upset that pretty much two characters I loved were dead (actually there are so many I have loved that are dead in this series). It was the fact that Yuta/Gojo hybrid didn’t really do much to stop Sukuna and Yuji beat him by punching him till Nobara and Megumi finally showed up to the fight. Let’s also not forget how CHOSO DIED WHEN HE DIDN’T HAVE TO! My poor guy was done so dirty (I’m just going to go cry forever now), and the characters even talk about all the bullshit that went on that they could have avoided but for some reason didn’t???

Besides all the crazy stuff that just honestly doesn’t make sense, with the release of chapters 269 and 270. It’s looking pretty clear that there will be a sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen, and I’m not all that happy about it. I’m the type of person that likes a good thing left alone, and JJK was good before these last handful of chapters. Depending on the final chapter coming out, yes, I would be good with a follow up series because there is stuff I want to know! Mainly, Yuji’s three parents story, Toji meeting his wife, and what happens in a world without the strongest person, Gojo.

Then there’s the predictions, could Sukuna come back since some of his remains, well remain? What if the merge with Tengen happened and Sukuna merged with him?  Is Kenjaku actually gone for good (doubt it!). Apparently, Geto didn’t get the message and came back to life (or someone is using his body for fun and jokes. Yes, pun intended!). I would say the biggest thing I hope happens is that Gojo comes back and not in the many that so desperately want (I mean I do too, but let’s be real. Gege hates him, so he would only bring him back to make him suffer more). I think it would be cool if Gojo woke up on the battlefield and is now the most powerful curse that there has ever been, with all six eyes to kill non-sorcerers. I’m just saying it would make for a very interesting sequel for the series and would make things incredibly difficult for all the currently alive characters (especially his students who love him dearly). The fanbase would also lose their goddamn minds. Other than those small predictions and lingering questions…there’s not really anything to catch interest for readers to follow into the next series (other than the still left alive characters).

My complete and utter final thoughts I will be leaving for when the final chapter is out, and yes I will be reading the leaks (and the official translation). But, I have to say Jujutsu Kaisen really did take the world by storm and change the course of the manga/anime industry. I am going to miss reading it weekly and seeing what Gege would surprise us all with next, so let’s hope he gives us a helluva good sucker punch with the final chapter to have us chomping at the bit for a sequel series.
