GAIL DAUGHTRY AND THE CELEBRITY SEX PASS movie review – A Hollywood comedy

Review by Leonid Urevich and Dan Berry

Director: David Wain
Starring: Zoey Deutch, John Slattery, Ken Marino, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Ben Wang, Sabrina Impacciatore, and Jon Hamm
Movie Length: 1 hour 34 minutes

Leo’s thoughts: Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is directed by David Wain who also co-wrote the movie with his comedy veteran buddy Ken Marino, and it is the funniest comedy I’ve seen all year I haven’t laughed this much in a theater in a while, now it’s not highbrow humor but it will make you laugh, this movie felt like a live action Family Guy in a way that there were celebrity appearances left and right and jokes at every corner.

The main plot of the movie is Gail Daughtry is about to get married to her high school sweetheart, when she learns that there’s a thing called a celebrity sex pass, so she thought it was a joke so she made one with her soon to be husband. But when the husband took that pass too literal, Gail thinks the only way to save her marriage is to sleep with her celebrity sex pass crush, and so she goes on an adventure like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz off to get laid.

Now if you are going into this movie expecting an Oscar like movie then you will be disappointed because this movie is not that it’s designed to be a fun watch.

Like with every movie it’s not a perfect one, some jokes dragged on too long and some jokes were unnecessary, almost like seeing a stand up comedian keep doing jokes and not know where to stop. The one thing that I think this movie does well is they set up a joke and then you see the punchline later or sometimes they’ll do a call back to a joke that they did earlier in the movie and that makes that joke even funnier, which reminded me of Family Guy. Now if you don’t like Family Guy I still think you will have a great time with this movie.

Overall I wasn’t the biggest fan of the ending it kind of makes the journey of the movie pointless, imagine Dorothy being told that she can go home by simply clicking her heels and Dorothy says you know what I’m going to stay here and throws away the shoes, some might like that ending and some might even argue that it’s not about the prize or the destination, it’s about the friends you make along the way, and with that I give this movie an A- for Academy.

Dan’s thoughts: As a fan of the early 90s MTV sketch show The State, when I heard about this movie it was a no brainer for me to want to see. Not only was Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass directed by David Wain, but he and Ken Marino co-wrote it, and quite a few members of The State comedy troupe appear in the movie.

If there ever was a movie that fit the “You don’t know what’s coming next” line, this was it. From the opening scene until the credits roll, this movie had a lot of laughs (some of which were probably from lines that were ad-libbed). The main cast including non-The State members Zoey Deutch, Ben Wang, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley all brought the laughs, while Ken Marino, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Thomas Lennon,
Joe Lo Truglio, and David Wain did what they do best and kept the laughs going (with some improv/ad-libbed lines I think).

All in all, this was a funny movie that got a lot of laughs from the audience in the same screening, so if you want to see a comedy that doesn’t take itself seriously (or if you’re like me and a fan of The State), this is a movie to go see.

Dan’s rating: 6/10.
