Alright, buckle up, because Patrick Kindlon and Maurizio Rosenzweig just dropped Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1, and hot damn, it’s a ride! It’s a full-throttle, no-holds-barred blast of a story about a mom who has lost everything and is out for blood in the grimy world of organized crime. First off, let’s talk about Maurizio Rosenzweig’s art. When I saw that cover, my brain immediately screamed “Frank Miller!” – think gritty, raw, straight-up noir vibes like Sin City, Ronin and Lone Wolf and Cub. And guess what? The interior art totally delivers on that promise. Rosenzweig’s style is super engaging; it’s got an awesome, minimalist feel that just works with Kindlon’s wild, pulp-fiction storytelling. It’s not overdone, not too “commercial,” just pure, raw comic book goodness. Seriously, it even gave me flashbacks to the early, raw days of TMNT by Eastman and Laird, and that’s a huge compliment in my book!
The action kicks off on page one and literally does not stop until the very last panel. We meet Gehenna, our main character, in the middle of what’s supposed to be a revenge hit on some mobsters. But, as things often do in awesome action stories, it goes sideways fast, and she ends up grabbing a crime boss’ kid. From there, it’s a non-stop chase through back alleys and over rooftops, with bullets flying everywhere. While she’s blasting bad guys, Gehenna’s mind keeps drifting back to her old life – her husband, her baby. You start piecing together her tragic backstory, and it hit me: this is like The Punisher, but it’s a mom. She’s lost absolutely everything, and the scumbags who took it from her are about to pay a price straight from hell. As her flashbacks reveal how she got to this point, its crystal clear she’s got one goal: wipe out everyone involved in her family’s deaths. Now, with detectives hot on her trail and a crime boss’s son as her unwilling travel companion, things are about to get really interesting.
Without spoiling all the delicious details, Kindlon’s writing is just plain good. It’s a super quick, easy read, but it’s the attitude he brings to the page that makes it shine. It’s hard-hitting, unapologetic, and honestly, a little campy in the best possible way. This is the kind of storytelling that makes comics so much fun – it’s pure, unadulterated entertainment. When you pair that with Rosenzweig’s gritty, raw art, you get a fantastic, noir-infused comic book that just oozes cool. The flashbacks, the shootouts, the relentless action…it all just makes you desperate to know what happens next. If you’re looking for something fresh, something you can just dive headfirst into and get totally hooked on, then you NEED to pick up Gehenna: Naked Aggression #1. I’m already counting down the days until the next issue when it comes out on July 18th 2025!
