I think it’s time to talk about the newest season of, well not really new, but definitely back in the spotlight again, Bridgerton. With the start of season three, part two (and yes most of us are still salty they split up the season) which of course everyone is obsessed with watching at the moment. I’ve never talked about the series here before and now that season three is here, I feel like it’s okay for me to be the wrench in everyone’s plans…
Bridgerton is the sweet that I treat myself with, and it’s very typically bodice ripper tv for my generation of media (now I’m not bashing the series, ok? Just hear me out). I’m not saying that reading romance novels is beneath my reading level, I mean have you met me?! I love reading anything with even a hint of romance in it! I will read anything and watch anything if it holds enough of my interest, because nobody has time to waste on things that they don’t enjoy.
Back to the actual point of why there even is an article, which even as I write this, I’m thinking of all the things I could write about connecting to Bridgerton. Let’s start off with talking about this new season. It seems that a lot of fans are having a harder time getting lost in the show, in the fantasy of it all. Because it feels like some of the characters have flipped a 180 on us, and yes I understand character growth. This season though…I feel like it definitely took a turn from where season one started us off at.
I’ll just come out and say it, I don’t like this newest season. Yes, there were parts I loved and enjoyed. Majority of it was the fact that I started to dislike the characters or wished they had given more attraction to the main couple of the season. It felt as if they didn’t want to focus on them as much and set up more things for the future seasons, and had too many plotlines all going on all at once.
I rewatched multiple episodes of this season because I would just zone out and miss things too, or I actually fell asleep. After watching it all, I immediately went back to season one to do a re-watch to see if the problem was me. Have I just grown out of this show? Is my memory of the previous seasons a lie? Did I just get swept away in the hype? No, I did not. Because I am loving every single moment of Daphne and the Duke’s romance, it’s addicting! There is a lack of 16 plots to follow, so I do believe that season three just doesn’t focus enough on the main couple (and wants to pull away from the original work). I also think that the writer’s and the powers that be for this season wanted to appeal to a wider audience, focusing on more modern ideals and making the characters a plot device for them.
I do think I will try giving the third season another try, but much later down the line. It also just might be time for me to step away from the series for a bit of a breather, which won’t be hard with how much time is between us getting new seasons. For now I’m just going to be enjoying season one and two again, I just love the fake dating and enemies to lovers tropes.
