REDLIGHT #1 review – (Cho, Petraites, Mrva, Cipriano) AWA Studios – A rather ambitious and creative start with this new series

Writer: Sarah H. Cho
Artist: Priscilla Petraites
Colorist: Miroslav Mrva
Letterer: Sal Cipriano

Thanks to AWA Studios for the review copy!

A new erotic thriller mini-series from the mind of newcomer Sarah Cho and Priscilla Petraites of Rat Queens. In the future mankind uses A.I. to power its sex worker industry. As an A.I. sex worker Lacy becomes increasingly more sentient during her care for a young child she starts resenting her job and her maker.

Sarah Cho and team are off to a rather ambitious and creative start with this new series. As we become more and more reliant on A.I. one has to wonder if a reality like this is in the not so distant future. Cho paints an interesting picture for us that has some pretty hefty depth to it. The thought of bringing the sex worker industry and future of A.I. together is both thought provoking and chilling.

The story is written and narrated in a way that helps drive the plot and allow for a more personal connection. At times, it’s almost like reading a journal, allowing you to see and feel exactly what our protagonist, Lacy, is thinking or experiencing. What if A.I. gained empathy and how would that empathy change the course of its thoughts and reactions? Adding a young lonely human girl into the mix folds yet another layer and wrinkle into this deeply intricate story. The book is also beautifully drawn and colored. Erotically and energetically engaging but not to the point where the heart of the story is lost amongst the pages. The first issue reminds me at times of Spielberg’s A.I. and a little bit of Blade Runner 2049. It’s a great homage to sci-fi stories that resonate emotionally with the viewer or reader and there is a lot we can learn from Lacy only one issue in. I look forward to reading the next issue! Check it out folks!

My rating 9/10 – Great!!
