SANCTION #1 review – Great crime noir story (Fawkes, Fuso, Lecce, Sharpe) Mad Cave Studios

Writer: Ray Fawkes
Artist: Antonio Fuso
Colorist: Emilio Lecce
Letterer: Dave Sharpe

Thanks to Mad Cave Studios for the review copy!

A brand new crime-thriller set in Leningrad during the 80’s. A pair of hard boiled detectives start digging up similarities between an old case and a recently deceased woman. What appears at first to be an open and shut case is anything but. They eventually end up on a path that will ultimately put their own lives at stake while uncovering a plot much larger than anything they bargained for.

I love a good crime noir detective story and there has been a lot of good stuff coming out lately. This ranks pretty high right out of the gate! I love the way we are introduced to the characters. Almost immediately you realize there’s just something about this case that’s different when one of the top detectives passes on the case to his co-worker and fellow detective. We just know that decision is going to come back to haunt him. Fawkes does a great job of building up the tension and curiosity around this particular case and as it starts to come together you can’t help but wonder how this is all going to play out. As we get towards the end of the issue the pacing escalates and it leaves you hanging on to that last page by your fingernails hoping you can hang on until the next issue arrives. It’s a great setup with witty and smart dialogue and panels that bring out some of the best art and colors I’ve seen this year. It’s highly detailed, gritty and colorful. The panel work blends perfectly with the story. It’s just a really good book and it’s early to say this, but I could see this kind of story materialize beyond the comic book into tv or even potentially theaters down the road. Mad Cave has just been knocking it out of the park lately! Don’t sit on this one folks!

My review – 9/10 Great!!
