THE CREATOR review – Terrific original sci-fi story

Director: Gareth Edwards
Starring: John David Washington, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, and Allison Janney
Runtime: 2 hours 13 minutes

What it is: A futuristic sci-fi film that sees human race battling artificial intelligence based forces. The movie follows Joshua (John David Washington), an ex-special forces agent who has been giving a task to find and kill “The Creator” who made a weapon that has the power to destroy mankind.

What Dan thought: Wow. Going into this movie I had no idea what to expect. It’s more than just an action packed sci-fi movie, as it goes into some pretty interesting moral dilemmas.

Some of the battle scenes felt like they were taken right out of the history books from the Vietnam War, and given that Edwards cited Apocalypse Now as one of his inspirations for the movie, I totally see it.

The role of the simulant/weapon was played by Madeleine Yuna Voyles in her debut acting role…and wow. If her acting skills in this movie are any indication of her future, we are in for a treat.

The rest of the main cast including John David Washington, Gemma Chan, the always outstanding Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, and Allison Janney all helped the movie keep a smooth pace over the 2 plus hours of runtime.

Of course a good sci-fi movie needs a good score…and Hans Zimmer delivered (did you expect anything but though from a composer who has been doing it well for 5 decades now?). The special effects and some of the simulants (robots/droids) felt right out of Star Wars, which given Edwards previous directorial work shouldn’t be a shock.

Dan’s grade: A. Without having to play in the Star Wars sandbox, Edwards was able to create one of the best sci fi movies of the year…and one that will be in the top 5 movies of the year for a lot of people IMO.

The Creator is now in theaters.
