THE LAST WARDENS #1 review – Gorgeous, wildly detailed, frenetic, and expressive (Sperl, Tishler, Silveira, Segala, Cvetkovic) – Mad Cave Studios

Writers: Elliot Sperl and Amit Tishler
Artist: Rui Silveira
Colorist: Francesco Segala
Letterer: Frank Cvetkovic

Thanks to Mad Cave for the review copy!!

A young caring woman is left with some tough decisions after her MIA brother suddenly reappears home from Vietnam with some mysterious illness. Caught in the middle of saving her brother’s life and battling her abusive alcoholic father she’s forced into fighting a supernatural battle that could involve the fate of the entire world.

This is a wild book folks! Lot’s to unpack and explore as you dive into this richly detailed world brought to life with emotionally charged storytelling. Sperl and Tishler have taken what seems to be a very horrific and monstrous idea and somehow grounded it with the addition of layers of family drama and flawed personality traits. Body horror and mental illness brought together in a scary little package that delivers both fear and the chills. While the art in the first issue is gorgeous and wildly detailed it’s also frenetic, and expressive. It adds a wonderful contrast to the demons the characters in the story are already facing. PTSD, alcoholism, mental abuse, etc. to name a few. There is a lot for our main character Danielle to deal with as she’s literally and currently the only sane person in this story leading into the final pages. This is a very ambitious start for the creative team and I’m curious to see how it unfolds over the next couple issues. If you are a fan of body horror, family crisis, and in general, wildly imaginative narratives, this might be the refreshing new offering on the stands you need! Definitely worth a look this week!

My rating – 7/10 Good!
