TRANSFORMERS GALAXIES #1 review – Kinder Gentler Constructions – very mild spoilers (Bleszinski, Ramondelli, Long, IDW Publishing)

Tyler Bleszinski (Author), Livio Ramondelli (Artist, Cover Artist), Tom B. Long (Letterer), Nick Roche (Variant Cover Artist)

Thanks to IDW Publishing for the review copy!

IDW’s Transformers Galaxies comic pitches itself as “a bold new era.”  One issue isn’t enough to totally deliver on that bold claim, but this is a great start.  The Constructicons have often been glossed over in terms of personality and background. They are relatively fungible green construction vehicles that combine to form Devastator, who is a huge destructive force.  They’ve gotten by on the coolness of their ability to combine…until now. This issue flashes back to the origins of the Constructions and their alter-ego Devastator. In the process, writer Tyler Bleszinski and artist Livio Ramondelli manage to pull off a fun trifecta.  First, they successfully give each Constructicon a unique personality. Second, they give fascinating glimpses of Cybertronian history through flashbacks to the rebuilding of Iacon after the “War Against The Threefold Spark”. Finally, they give the Constructicons a heart.  In the original cartoon, the Autobots were all good and Decepticons were all bad. IDW has done a good job of shading its characters and shifting alliances. This continues here, as you really start to like these guys.

The structure of this issue is split between the present day and a flashback.  The present, set on an Energon Processing Planetoid, is pretty straightforward until questions slowly arise as to what the overall situation is.  While not much happened, it teased just enough to want to learn more about what is going on. There’s also a pretty nifty teaser for future issues at the end.  The flashback is where most of the interesting stuff occurs, as we see the origins of the Constructicons. Fans of Wheeljack will enjoy seeing him. Another ‘bot named Termagax plays a large role in the flashback, but I was unfamiliar with her prior to reading this issue.

Fans of the Constructicons will definitely check this issue out.  No other knowledge of the Transformers is necessary to enjoy it.

Check back tomorrow for my thoughts on the second issue of this series!
