New York Comic Con is almost upon us – just over four weeks and counting, taking over the Javits Center in the Big Apple from Thursday 3rd to Sunday 6th October 2019 – and the sheer amount of content is starting to burst at the seams. But it’s not just at the core show where comics fans can check out their creative heroes, there’s also plenty of off-site events taking place over the course of the weekend and TRIPWIRE MAGAZINE‘s Joel Meadows has pulled together one of the most star-studded of the lot.
Joel is the author of a book that we’re big fans of, here at THE CONVENTION COLLECTIVE: ‘Masters Of Comics’ is an impressive celebration not only of the careers but also the varied working spaces and methodology of some of the industries most prestigious names. Published by Insight Editions and featuring the likes of Frank Quitely, Tim Sale, Posy Simmonds, Frank Cho and many more, it’s an illuminating look into what the world’s finest do to create the books we pick up each and every Wednesday.
The book gets a companion presentation during New York Comic Con, held at the Society Of Illustrators venue (128 East 63rd Street, NY) on Saturday 5th October at 8pm (bang in the middle of con siesta time?? Amateur move, Joel!) and will be having a panel made up of some, frankly, jaw-dropping names: Rafael Albuquerque (AMERICAN VAMPIRE, EIGHT), Bill Sienkiewicz (Legion TV show, ELEKTRA ASSASSIN), Yuko Shimuzu (THE UNWRITTEN, New York Times) and Walter Simonson (RAGNAROK, THOR, MANHUNTER), Dan Panosian (cover artist 100 BULLETS, THE PUNISHER), and Dave Johnson (artist, X-MEN, LOGAN) will join Joel on stage to talk about ‘their working practices and their studios’.
Sounds fascinating and cool. Let’s be honest, though, if people wanted to find out about that, here’s hoping they’d just buy the book – I, for one, will be crossing fingers for a more of a looser, Panosian/Johnson ‘Original Drink & Draw Social’ vibe about the whole presentation – adult beverages all-round, anybody?
Tickets are $20 for non-SOI members, $15 for Members and $10 Seniors/students (Undergrad with valid ID) – a bargain at twice the price, to spend time in the company of these master artists. Tickets are available here, and I’d move quickly to snap them up, I’m sure they’ll shift quickly. I mean, c’mon! Albuquerque! Sienkiewicz! Shimuzu! Simonson! The other blokes!
MASTERS OF COMICS is a lavish paperback published by Insight Editions which also includes artists like Eduardo Risso (100 Bullets, Moonshine), Frank Quitely (All-Star Superman, Batman & Robin, Jupiter’s Children), Sean Phillips (Criminal, Kill Or Be Killed), Posy Simmonds (Tamara Drewe, Gemma Bovery), Michael Kaluta (The Shadow, Books Of Magic) and many more. Introduction by TV writer and producer Mark Verheiden (Daredevil, Ash vs Evil Dead, Swamp Thing).
