Uncharted is a movie you have seen before, it’s like Indiana Jones or Tomb Raider, so if you loved those movies you will like this movie. What’s cool about this movie is that Tom Holland looked like he did his own stunts, and they looked awesome.
If you haven’t seen the trailer for this movie (it’s above if you care to…), it is an origin story for Nathan Drake from the Naughty Dog series of video games.
Now I personally would have preferred a more mature Nathan Drake like we have in the games but I think this origin story worked out well. Even though I like Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, I think they were wrong for their roles. There’s a scene where they show Young Nathan Drake or should I say a younger version, and he looks nothing like Tom Holland. Everybody’s acting in this movie was phenomenal though, just mis-cast in my personal opinion.
Sully in the game looks nothing like Mark Wahlberg (and doesn’t act like him either…) Sully in my personal opinion has always been the heart of the Uncharted franchise and the fact that the movie got him so wrong robs the movie of heart.
Another thing that was hard to get over was how poorly they portrayed pick pocketers. The pick pocketers in this movie are apparently magicians, that can magically pickpocket anybody without even being to close to the subject. Think if a magician said, look I’m going to make something appear in my hand and poof it’s there, it’s not impressive if you didn’t see what was in that hand before. You might think they had it there the whole time.
And speaking of time, there are so many times the characters backstabbed each other throughout the film, it made it hard to identify who the real villain was. Lastly I would like to address how this movie actually felt like a video game, it felt like you were not just watching a movie but like you were actually in it. This was probably because I watched the movie on an IMAX screen which tends to have a very immersive factor, for example when Nathan was falling out of the airplane, I actually felt like I was falling out of the airplane with him. That being said, I recommend seeing the movie on an IMAX screen if you can.
Overall I had a great time with this movie, and if you don’t think too much about it, how that doesn’t make sense or dwell on how the actors don’t look like the characters they are portraying, I think you will have a great time with this movie as well. Side note no, you don’t need to play the games to like this movie you can go into it blind and still enjoy the movie and understand it, and I think that is one of the things that make a good movie.
I give it a B+ for Barcelona Bartender.
Uncharted is now playing in theaters in the United States.
