A Ten Year Journey Finally at it’s End – my farewell to Attack on Titan

I can still remember the first time Attack On Titan premiered on TV here in the states, there had been so much talk and promos for it coming to Adult Swim. I was only in my second year of high school when I first started watching AoT, and I have been rooting for Eren to achieve freedom for ten long years.

It is absolutely insane to me that this series is finally over, I finished the manga a year or so ago. But, seeing it in anime really makes it come to life and hits even harder that I won’t be seeing these characters in their story anymore. It’s also nuts to think about how far it has come, I mean when we all started watching it was just about some kids wanting to fight against giant human-like creatures who ate everyone.

This past weekend I finally took the plunge and watched both of the hour and a half specials (felt like two hours each actually), I wanted to be caught up and watching with everyone else. Just as I was back in high school, and I didn’t want to wait anymore.

So the time has come, and Attack on Titan is really truly over after these long ten years. No more waiting years for another season or part two or three or five. Ever since the manga ended and now the anime, a lot of people have been upset with the ending or one thing or another with it all. But with both endings being the same, I think I feel at peace with it all. Obviously, yes I will be reading some fanfiction for the next few weeks for AoT (only because I want to see more of my ship), but I have no real problems with the end at all. I can accept it, and it leaves me at peace.

If I was going to talk about anything from the series or ending I didn’t like, it would be the sudden romantic love Eren feels for Mikasa now of all times. It has always been one sided from her point of view, with no real depth. Honestly, it just seemed like someone who was confused about what kind of love they felt toward someone (like what happened in Naruto). So Eren suddenly being all in love with her now was a bit off for me, but didn’t take away from the plot or ending of the series.

I will miss each of these characters, Mikasa, Annie, Connie, Jean, Gabi, Falco, Reiner, Eren, Levi, and even Armin. I’m still surprised with myself for already missing Armin, who has been a favorite of mine in these specials and the one to make me cry my eyes out in these final two specials.I still remember rooting for him to be eaten by a titan back in the day, since he was always such a crybaby. Though the one I will miss the most is Eren himself, I can’t help but imagine his younger self waking up under that tree in the first episode. The smile he would wear when running with his friends, and the look on his face as he flew through the sky.

For my farewell and thank you to the series that kept me entertained in so many ways, and emotionally devastated at times. Thank you for the wonderful ten years of drawn out pain, endless questioning and an epic fight for freedom. See you later Eren…
