DC’s STARGIRL – Episode 6 – “Justice Society of America” review – That’s What I’m Talking About! (Minor Spoilers)

After slowly building a new team of do-gooders, this episode finally lets the good guys open up and sends them on their first mission. In doing so, Stargirl gives us its most impressive fight scenes yet, merging nifty special effects with creative choreography. In many ways, it feels like the show is finally letting loose, providing its the most enjoyable episode yet.

Early in the season, it felt like the focus would be on the relationship and partnership between Courtney (Brec Bassigner) and her step-father/sidekick Pat (Luke Wilson). The last few episodes have driven a wedge in that dynamic as Courtney recruits teammates and Pat does the adult “it’s too dangerous” thing. This episode brings that conflict to a head, and sets up the rest of the season nicely.

Stargirl continues to walk an interesting line between goofy and menacing.  The superhero and villain costumes can be cartoony, but people die. The bad guys can be kind of funny, but also savagely brutal. This episode introduces two new villains who are essential to the aforementioned fight scenes. Keeping with a strength of the show so far, the new players don’t come out of nowhere. [Very Mild Spoiler Alert] Remember that random guy who invited Pat to his gym a few episodes ago? He’s back. DC fans may also want to pay attention to his daughter’s name, as it could portend a future storyline.

Continuing my ‘where is Amy Smart?’ watch, Barbara is given a small subplot with Mike.  Fun Amy Smart fact: She was in Starship Troopers. I think that alone merits drawing her character into the main story. Given the writers’ track record so far, I’m willing to be patient.

If you haven’t seen Stargirl yet, this episode is as good a place as any to start. It’s the first assembling of Stargirl’s new team, it introduces some interesting villains, hints at the overall evil plot, and it showcases the best action in the series so far. In my opinion, this is the best episode of the series to date.

This episode will debut on Monday, June 22nd

Check back next week for my thoughts on the 7th episode of the series.
