Thanks to AHOY Comics for the review copy!
A new series from AHOY written by acclaimed writer Tyrone Finch of Swine with art and colors by Sebastian Piriz of We Ride Titans. When two down on their luck henchman villain types decide they don’t want to be bad anymore, certainly nothing good can come of it!
Deadweights tells a story from the point of view of the villain which has been popular as of late. We are bombarded so much by the classic take on the superhero genre that it’s nice to see different angles and creative new stories that are still somewhat based in that world but that make you think about things completely differently. Plus, who doesn’t like a bit of a redemption story? Especially when it’s about two of the most unlikely and despicable characters you’ve been introduced to in a while. These guys appear to be the lowest of the low. Their own fellow villains want them dead! It’s a pretty cool ride and one that Finch is able to explore and expand rather fully in the first issue. Thus, setting the tone for a myriad of dramatic scenes and subplots that will likely occur over the next few issues. I really enjoyed the panel layout and art as well. It has a paint-like quality that is rich with detail and is brought to life perfectly in each panel. Even the way the lettering is used in and outside the panels adds life to the pages. It’s a nice little package and I enjoyed reading this first issue. I look forward to reading issue two when it drops!
My rating – 9/10 Great!
There were also two short stories in the issue:
Hardcover
Writer: Stuart Moore
Artist: Greg Scott
I really enjoy this short story. I thought it was really creative and touching. It’s a very detailed and carefully crafted war scene. Initially as the reader I was seriously fearful for our two central characters. Right up until the end I was worried about their outcome. Upon its ending though, I was left at peace with how it all turned out. I was quite surprised how attached I had become in such a short time to the characters. Excellent piece of writing.
My rating – 10/10 Superb!
Transformed, Like Totally
Writer: Johanna B. Stumpf
Artist: Lea Seidman
I thought this was a really fun little short story with a bit of a revenge theme although it comes off as quite funny and has a rather unexpected ending. I had to chuckle when it finally hits me at the end and really would have loved to see her former friend’s face at this little get-together! It’s a cute little story!
My rating – 10/10 Fantastic!
