What it’s about: A new Shudder original based on the viral social media game. A mourning brother convinces a group of internet sleuths who debunk urban legends to take their web series show to a hotel where his sister was supposedly killed. Unbeknownst of his plan to actually investigate his sister’s brutal death the group is dragged into a nightmare while unleashing a malevolent spirit. The urban legend soon becomes a game of life or death.

What Corey Thought: Elevator Game follows a trend we are seeing a lot these days as it’s based on something that originated on social media. That doesn’t mean it’s not entertaining as it brings the fear and tension in spades! It’s also a premise that works! It almost reminds me of the fun times we had as kids playing Bloody Mary in the closet or a dark bathroom with our friends. It’s just been updated into a slightly more intricate and somehow more scary version for the millennial generation. Any time you are asked to stand somewhere with your eyes closed and invoke some words or follow some commands you know it’s not going to be good! I bet your imagination is running now just thinking about it and that’s what this movie brings to the table. The fact that these kids are willing to play this game and stand in an elevator and wait for something bad to happen invokes all those old memories of Bloody Mary for me.  Except, these kids don’t realize when they lose in this game, they are losing their life! It’s all of our previously dormant twisted and fearful thoughts brought to fruition! Frankly, that’s terrifying!

Elevator Game is a fun movie that lives inside our minds with the characters in the film. The practical and special effects are solid and the score adds plenty of creepiness to really ratchet up the tension. The group of actors sell it perfectly being cast as a just out of high school web series team. There isn’t a lot of gore but when there is it’s pretty gnarly and it will satisfy most gore hounds. The story itself is pretty straightforward but there is a little bit of a twist that you learn fairly early on that I kind of suspected from the beginning. Overall, it’s a perfect title to kick off Halloween with on Shudder which is a must buy for me around this time of year. Check it out with some friends! You won’t be disappointed.

My rating 8/10 Great!

Elevator Game is now streaming on Shudder.
