A new start for the iconic series brought to life by legendary writer Larry Hama, artist Chris Mooneyham, and Colorist Francesco Segala. With the Energon Universe kicking off and multiple spin-offs in tow G.I. Joe is back and better than ever as they have their first major faceoffs with Cobra Commander, Destro, Dr. Mindbender, and Serpentor Kahn as the latter plans to unleash a deadly bio-weapon and create a mutant army by his design.
G.I. Joe is back folks! Getting back to its roots but also part of a bigger stage as 2024 is shaping up to add a lot of new books and spin-offs as part of the Transformer and G.I. Joe shared universe. Hama gets back to his roots writing a great 1st issue for this new launch and in return it was refreshing to see G.I. Joe get back to some of it’s harder, more intense and meaningful storylines in quite some time. You can just tell he has a knack for writing these characters as the dialogue is sharper and feels more purpose driven right out of the gate. He covers a lot of ground fast as we get reacquainted with the good and bad guys while fleshing out a dramatic mission at the same time. A mission that appears will run a few issues in the least as Serpentor Kahn see’s the first part of his plan come to fruition which could have devastating effects. Let’s just say it’s going to be interesting to see how the team handles this new threat going forward! The art is great too. Mooneyham doesn’t look like he’s new to drawing these characters at all. His wonderfully detailed and immersive pencils drop us right in the middle of the battle and carefully flow from panel to panel with ease. Segala adds some vibrant and energetic tones which help to elevate the art even further and I was really impressed with the quality and detail that went into this book. If you are an old fan, new fan, or otherwise this is a great place to jump in! It captures the magic of the old school G.I. Joe comics while pathing the way for something refreshing and new. You won’t be disappointed!
My rating – 9/10 Great!!
