LETHOPHOBIA: THE FEAR OF OBLIVION is a collection of largely independent short stories with an interspersed story that helps transition between them. One of the benefits of an anthology series is getting to sample different stories, and in this volume there is quite a varied selection, ranging from horror to spy thriller to science fiction. My favorite story, about a spaceship crashing, falls squarely into the science fiction category.
One of the best parts about this book is the way it transitions between stories. It’s hard to explain because it’s a technique I’ve seen in movies but never in a book. One example is, at the end of a story, a bus drives by with an advertisement for an action movie on it. The panel then shifts to the scene on that ad and the next story begins (this story is also one of my favorites). I’m not doing it justice, but suffice to say the transitions are cool.
The art does a good job of meshing with the often uneasy feeling the stories give you. The characters are filled with wavy lines that evoke wrinkles and being disheveled. While the character designs lack any standout over the top characteristics, it is easy to tell everyone apart in the stories (most don’t have that many characters in them).
LETHOPHOBIA: THE FEAR OF OBLIVION packs a lot of material in its volume. It includes some cursing, violence, and very minor nudity so a little parental discretion is advised.
