NO HEROINE is an interesting addiction parable told through monsters. Issue one used vampires to examine drug addiction. Issue 2 used a werewolf to explore domestic violence. Issue 3, which resolves the arc, employs a gross nipple ring wearing demon to explore guilt.
The story continues to be anchored by Kayla, who struggles with her past as an addict while fighting these monsters. In this issue, some of the demons she fights are the ones in her mind. But one thing that makes Kayla an interesting heroine (or no heroine) is her deeply flayed past and her determination to move past it. I realized how much I was rooting for Kayla in the second half of the book, as she had a real life altering choice to make. The art team of Criss Madd, Shawna Madd, and Sean Rinehart do a great job of drawing out the suspense, with each panel inching her slowly towards the decision.
As has been the case in prior issues, there’s a fair amount of cursing, violence, and adult themes surrounding death and drug use to warrant parental discretion. While the series has been, and continues to be pretty dark, there is enough hope sprinkled in to leave you with a little optimism.
NO HEROINE #3 is set to be released on September 30th, the 2nd issue is set to be released on August 23rd. The second and third issues can be pre-ordered now. The first issue sold out, but will be getting a second print soon.
