A scrumptious new mini-series from writer Ram V and artist Filipe Andrade. When a demonic and eccentric foodie decides he wants to film a series and enlists a film student to assist, the student becomes a willing accomplice to whatever nefarious plans the gastronomic visionary has in mind.
This is a book that has been on my radar since I had a chance to check out the ashcan edition a month or two ago. It’s a brilliant start to what may be one of the most original books of the year. Like most of my reviews, I like to give the reader a comparison or reference to help gauge their interest in a specific comic.
In this case, if you are interested in a refreshing and original story that’s a little bit Hannibal Lecter and a little bit Anthony Bourdain, this might be the book you are looking for! It’s also one of the only comics that I can remember that left me wanting a cup of Masala Chai! Haha! Ram V crammed a lot of details into this first issue and you can tell it was very carefully pieced together. The dialogue is rich with cultural flare and high society eloquence. The character detail is second to none. Our introduction to the main character Ruben is perfect. He’s mysterious, cunning and just bigger than life. He’s the kind of character you know might be up to something bad but you can’t help rooting for! There is definitely more than meets the eye here. The colors and art are also fresh and exhilarating. Andrade has a very unique style that lends well to this multicultural story. The coloring reminds me of a tropical sunset or a bowl of refreshing sherbet. The lettering is also perfect as it’s easy to read and carries you briskly from panel to panel. Overall, the first issue is steeped in mysteriousness and adventure and I can’t wait to see where this journey with Ruben takes us next. I highly recommend checking it out!
