ROME ETERNAL #1 review – A smart, action packed and bloody romp well worth checking out (Rios, Yapur, Carreno, Lee, Curnow) Magma Comix

Writer: Homero Rios
Artist: Diego Yapur
Colorist: Oscar Carreno
Letterer: Shawn Lee
Editor: Bobby Curnow

Thanks to Magma Comix for the review copy!

What if Rome never fell and has the intellect and technology of our modern world? That’s what Homero Rios, Diego Yapur, and team explore in this new action drama from Magma Comix. Rome is in turmoil in the modern age as it’s torn apart by corruption, extremists, and terrorists who live to see the Emperor overthrown and killed. When a group of extremists known as the Mithra Mysteries rise to the occasion, a battle unlike any we have witnessed is waged in gory and brutal detail.

Wow! This was a fun and really unique look at the Roman Empire. What an ambitious project as well! Trying to adapt the history and culture of that era and bring it full fledged into the present day this seamlessly is impressive alone. The dialogue, while mainly modern and straightforward, still uses bits of that antiquated language to really bring the story together as a cohesive whole. Rios does a nice job of marrying the two and telling a unique story that’s quickly paced and detailed. The art as well blends the historical details of that prior era into the setting. The uniforms, weaponry, and armor are mostly authentic but with some modern if not futuristic qualities. In fact, Yapur knocks the ball out of the park with the art here. It’s just gorgeous to look at. The action, the set pieces, the characters, the utter brutality. It’s an homage to Moebius in the most glorious fashion. I’m not sure I’ve seen another issue from any comic this year that packs so much detail and visual storytelling into every single page as this one. As I said earlier it’s a very ambitious comic book! The story is very engaging so don’t be fooled by the mythical or historical undertones. There is a lot more than meets the eye here. It’s a smart, action packed and bloody romp well worth checking out. Magma has been crushing it with their new books out of the gate and this looks like another banger. Check it out in comic shops now!

My rating – 8/10 Great!
