THE DEVIANT #3 review – Tynion continues to build a deeply intricate and psychological serial mystery (Tynion IV, Hixson, Otsmane-Elhaou) Image Comics

Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Joshua Hixson
Letterer: Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Thanks to Image Comics for the review copy!

In our third issue history appears to continue down the path of repeating itself as we flashback again to the original murders for more details and also a present day conversation between our sensitive writer Michael’s boyfriend and a co-worker. The police are now also looking to talk to Michael as these several decades apart events continue to parallel each other and everyone is a suspect.

Tynion continues to build a deeply intricate and psychological serial mystery with the 3rd chapter of The Deviant. The way he weaves the characters’ individual paths and journeys together across time is an achievement in its own. The similarities continue to drive the narrative while also noting how similar society remains between then and now. It’s brilliant as a horror story but even more so as a social commentary on how as much as things change they stay the same. We are now seeing the effects of Michael’s research and project beginning to affect his partner. While it’s nothing major currently it’s a sign that more and more things in Michael’s personal life are beginning to fray. There is a huge underlying tone of anxiety, stress, and being a loner that is present with all the characters in this book and it’s not difficult to believe that the very monster we seek is currently amongst them. The book continues to fire on all cylinders and while there continues to be a heavier focus on the characters personal lives versus the murders the sum of all these parts could never be more interesting.

My rating – 9/10 Great!
