THE BEEKEEPER movie review – a buzzing good time

Review by Dan Berry and Leo UR.

Director: David Ayer
Starring: Jason Statham, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons
Movie Length: 1 hour 45 minutes

What it is: The latest Jason Statham action packed movie. This time his character is out for revenge after one of his friends falls for a phishing scam which resulted in her losing her life savings.

What Dan thought: It was a fun and enjoyable action paced movie. When you see Jason Statham as a lead in a movie you can usually expect lots of action and fighting…and this movie definitely delivered with those. The fight scenes were well choreographed as one would expect from Jeremy Marinas who also served in that role for John Wick 4, Fast X, and others. Some of them were a bit over the top in terms of realism though. How Statham’s character kills some people is also over the top (including one scene that was ridiculous…you’ll know when you see it).

Some of the lines delivered were as ridiculous as some of the fights though, and that was probably intentional to go with the over the top-ness of the fight scenes. The movie started out slow as it set up the plot, and the end of the movie could be used to set up a sequel.

What Leo thought: The Beekeeper is David Ayers new movie and say what you want about David Ayers’ movies, one thing is for sure, they’re always entertaining and this one is no exception. You know what you’re getting yourself into when you see Jason Statham. He is one of those actors that plays the same role in every movie. Ryan Reynolds is a wisecracking annoying character, Liam Neeson has something taken from him that he has to get back, and so on. And Jason Statham when he’s not fighting megalodons is restoring justice into the world the only way he knows how, by kicking butt and not taking names.

The movie is well written and well acted in my personal opinion with flaws, and stuff that took me out of the movie. For example how he took the entire SWAT team, Seal Team 6 and so on by himself but almost died when he was fighting an overweight computer hacker that looks like all he eats is Doritos Locos tacos and plays Call of Duty non-stop. Things like that that were happening in the movie that didn’t make sense. He had this Superman complex how nobody could touch him but I guess overweight gamers was his kryptonite.

Speaking of fights, the fights were actually filmed well and choreographed better than the last John Wick movie and I think that’s high praise. January movies are usually a slow season and I had low expectations going in, and I was pleasantly surprised. Lastly I’m not sure if this is a spoiler or not but I just wish the movie had more of a ending, for me it seems like it ended appropriately. But maybe that was for the best, short and sweet as they say. I wouldn’t mind seeing a sequel.

Dan’s rating: B-. If you’re looking for an action packed movie that you don’t have to think much about while eating popcorn, The Beekeeper is 100% what you’re looking for.

Leo’s rating: Overall if you want to see a Mechanic/Transporter like movie I would definitely give this movie a go. I give The Beekeeper a B for a Buzzing good time.

The Beekeeper is now in theaters.
