TRANSFORMERS #4 Review – This bold, inventive reimaging continues to build steam as it barrels into its 4th issue (Johnson, Spicer, Wooton) Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment

Writer and Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publication Designer: Andres Juarez
Editor: Sean Mackiewicz

Thanks to Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment for the review copy!

The battle on Earth continues. After a full fledged attack by the Decepticons leaves the Autobots with their backs up against the wall they come up with an unlikely source of power to thwart the Decepticons and buy Optimus Prime a little more time to save the world and his friends.

DWJ continues to fire on all cylinders with this book and it’s something I personally can’t get enough of right now. This bold, inventive reimaging continues to build steam as it barrels into its 4th issue. So much so that I’ve already been looking to pre-order the first trade. The emotion, heart, and sense that Warren has thrown into these characters has completely reinvigorated what was slowly becoming just another book on the stands. There are twists around every corner. Life altering decisions. Consequences. Loss. Failure. It’s about as real of a book and story you could possibly hope for in such a fictional and outlandish world. G.I. Joe is slowly being weaved into the storyline. Duke’s arrival isn’t rushed, it’s not a simple cameo. It’s meant to be a larger part of the whole that’s properly developed and explored over time. If DWJ and the other creators who are currently working in this universe continue with this approach it’s no doubt this iteration of Transformers and G.I. JOE will go down as some of the best ever. Props to Spicer and Wooton also! The way they bring DWJ’s pencils and story to life is so immersive and gorgeous it’s hard to leave a single frame or page without really taking the additional time to soak it all in. It’s one of the best books on the shelves right now and with the release of Cobra Commander hot on its heels I can’t wait to see what’s next!

My rating – 10/10! Superb!
