THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #1 review – Gritty dialogue that’s intriguing and direct in its assault on your senses (Pepose, Cormack, Birch) Mad Cave Studios

Writer: David Pepose
Artist: Alex Cormack
Letterer: Justin Birch

Thanks to Mad Cave Studios for the review copy!

A new religious themed horror story from acclaimed writer David Pepose and award winning artist Alex Cormack that takes us back to the early days of Catholicism and a body swapping exorcism fail. One with potentially catastrophic and dire consequences.

Wow! This was fantastic! It’s dark, brooding, and masterfully chilling. Pepose digs right in with gritty dialogue that’s intriguing and direct in its assault on your senses. It’s boldly written, and in a way, induces fear and anxiety with each turn of the page. You can’t help but feel instantly attached to Father Vieri and his mission. Unfortunately for him, we learn late into the issue, this is not your average Exorcism! This of course is when Pepose hits us with that WTH twist that leaves you stunned. It’s a truly breathtaking read and a lot to digest in one read. I actually returned to it a second time right after I finished the first. It’s that good!  I loved the use of historical and religious elements as well. Things always tend to be more scary the closer they hit home. Cormack absolutely nails it with the art as well. It’s dark, detailed, and just brutal to look at. There are a couple panels that look like they are straight out of nightmares or drawn by the devil himself. The religious imagery, the setting, and the characters are all perfectly penciled. It’s the complete package if you’re looking for something scary and unsettling to jumpstart Halloween!

My rating – 10/10 Superb!
