Having enjoyed the first issue of THEY FELL FROM THE SKY, the release of volume 1, which contains the first five issues of the series, gave me a good excuse to revisit the series. The series employs one of the most enduring tools of the sci-fi trade – the nerdy high school friends who stumble onto something big. In this case, as the title should clue you in on, that something is an alien ship.
THEY FELL FROM THE SKY gives off an 80s movie vibe akin to E.T.. Tommy, the main character, and his pals are a nerdy group of science fiction fans who find themselves in a situation that feels ripped out of an episode of their favorite science fiction show (which hilariously is basically as close to Star Trek as you can get without getting a cease and desist letter). I really liked the progression of the issues, which really benefit from being collected in one edition. The first issue establishes the characters and the relationships between them. The second issue zeroes in on Tommy and his new ‘pet’ which gets way less attention than I would anticipate while deftly introducing a mysterious new character. Issue three gives some crucial backstory for the spaceship. Issues four and five bring most of the characters together for a pretty epic confrontation with some payoffs from plot points from the first issue. The volume culminates with a satisfying end to the story.
THEY FELL FROM THE SKY has some pretty fun visuals, especially near the end, with some cinematic action sequences that would make for a great movie adaptation. The characters (human and alien) each have a distinct design that makes it easy to tell them apart. The art is brightly colored.
While it’s always possible that more can be told, this volume tells a complete story. The story is family friendly, but there are more curse words than you’d expect from the cute art as well as one pretty gruesome death in issue 3. If you can live with that, THEY FELL FROM THE SKY is a fun story with a nice message.
THEY FELL FROM THE SKY Volume 1 is set for release on August 18, 2021.
