UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: DRACULA #4 review – I was blown away by the creativity and vision on display (Tynion IV, Simmonds, Wooton) Image/Skybound

Writer: James Tynion IV
Artist: Martin Simmonds
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Designer: Jillian Crab
Editor: Alex Antone

Thanks to Image and Skybound for the review copy!

The final riveting chapter in this bold and refreshing reimagining of one of the most revered and classical horror stories ever created. In this issue Renfield mistakenly leads Dr Seward, Professor Van Helsing, and John right to Dracula where their final confrontation and battle to save Nina comes to an exciting conclusion.

As has been the story with all four issues, the wondrous dialogue and artistic splendor that has taken this book by storm continues to flourish heading into the climax of this wickedly dark and fresh retelling. Tynion and Simmonds flex their creative muscle right up until the final pages and it’s been exciting to watch it unfold. My only problem, and something I had been apprehensive about since the beginning, was that the sum of the parts comes off as a little rushed. It’s easy to understand why as both of these creators are extremely busy with various other projects. I just wish they were able to squeeze maybe a 5th issue out of the source material as there is just so much there to work with. Nonetheless, I’m glad I had a chance to see what Dracula might look and feel like behind the eyes of Tynion and Simmonds and there were moments during each of these issues where I was blown away by the creativity and vision on display. These guys are true masters of their craft and we are all lucky to be witnesses. I look forward to seeing how the next Universal collaboration goes when Creature From The Black Lagoon rolls out in April! It’s sure to be another exciting book!

My rating – 7/10 Good!
