VENOM: the Sandbox review

Earlier this week I attended a screening of VENOM, and after hearing/reading about how the movie was getting destroyed review wise, I wondered if it was going to be 2 hours wasted.

In a nutshell, it wasn’t. While it’s no Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in terms of storyline and acting, it is a fun watch.

Tom Hardy did a good job as Eddie Brock/Venom (although his attempt at a New York accent wasn’t the greatest). Michelle Williams’ did a nice job as Eddie’s love interest, as did Riz Ahmed as the main villain of the movie.

Being that the movie was a Sony movie and not part of the overall MCU, no mention of Spider-Man was made (although they did mention Eddie moved from NY to San Francisco, that was about the only reference to Spider-Man in the movie).

Overall, I’d give the movie a 6 out of 10. The CGI was great, the story was a bit lacking and had a few plot holes unfortunately. Of course Stan Lee made his requisite cameo, and speaking of cameos stay for the mid-credit (well technically before the full credits run) scene. After all the credits run (which is around 15 minutes) there is an extended trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse which I enjoyed and made staying through the credits worth it.

Venom is now playing in theaters and stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, Michelle Williams as Anne, Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake, Scott Haze as Roland Treece, Reid Scott as Dan Lewis, Jenny Slate as Dora Skirth and Michelle Lee as Donna Diego. The movie was directed by Ruben Fleischer, and the screenplay was written by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg, and Kelly Marcel.
