Hey guys! We’re going to try something new here. I’m going to be doing a weekly review of each episode (as they come out) of Marvel’s What If…? I hope you get used to seeing what I think every Thursday, for all ten episodes we’re getting!
First of all, I’ve been pretty stoked for this since Loki ended. It opened the door and our minds to all the realms of possibility that is What If…? Just to give you all a little backstory of what What If…? is about, each episode is the same story we heard before but with a twist. Did you ever wonder or look up fanfiction about something that slightly changed an original story, but thus completely changed the entire universe itself? Well, with this first episode of What If, we get Captain Carter instead of Captain Rogers. A Hydra Stomper, instead of a Captain America. With each episode telling us a story we already know, but making one slight change that causes the whole story to be different and giving us endless possibilities (and hopefully more movies and shows, which we know could make Disney bank and they always want some more of that).
Anyway, we start with the story of The First Avenger (this episode is also called, “What if… Captain Cater were the First Avenger?”) the same except this time instead of Peggy going upstairs to the observation booth, she stays down below as does everyone else (including evil Hydra agent). The bad guy makes his move sooner than before, not just killing Dr. Erskine but also Colonel Chester Phillips (the grumpy guy that was in charge), and let’s not forget shooting Steve. Carter deals with this Hydra agent quickly then rushes into the super soldier maker, against orders (the experiment would have been lost otherwise) and comes out jacked. Peggy is the buffest and tallest lady you will see, and she rocks it even better than her trademark look of dark blue skirts and red hat.
My final thoughts on this first episode to kick off What If…? I loved it! I always wonder about different things happening with these characters. That it was somewhat lucky to be where they are and if they hadn’t made a certain choice who knows where everyone would be now, or who would fill the superhero role. The animation style was also another factor that was hard to look away from, although not seamless like anime or other cartoons (which I’m not saying that’s what What If is, just making a comparison). Lastly, I’m overjoyed that they made sure to bring up the difficulties that Peggy had to face (and would have faced) if she had become Captain Carter. With the all male work team, to criticisms and over generalizations of women (and therefore Peggy). To the sweet hearted Steve Rogers in every moment of his existence, and not being upset about never being able to have the chain to be different, stronger, taller, all that muscle and handsome. He never once was upset that he didn’t get the serum or that a woman like Peggy was able to get it. Oh! Before I forget, you might be hearing some familiar voices for our cast of characters… The actors for Peggy, Fury, Bucky, Hawkeye, Dum Dum Dugan, Dr. Erskine, Howard Stark, and Zola did all their own voices for this animated series! How cool is that!
I can’t recommend this new Marvel show enough to you all, and if you want to check out this basically Marvel fanfiction.
What If…? is only available on Disney+ with new episodes premiering every Wednesday!
