Okay we thought we got some bleak episodes before, but now it’s straight up nightmarish. It seems along with The Watcher, we will be forced to see some truly terrible universes out there that leave no hope. Though it seems that might change with some of the upcoming episodes, four left in counting now.
In this week’s episode everything that could have gone wrong does, starting with some of the events we lovingly remember. Our divergence in this universe starts with Ant-Man and The Wasp, when Hank Pym enters the quantum realm to save his wife Janet. This time though she waited all these years being infected with a type of brain disease, which made her into a zombie that attacked her husband as soon as she saw him. They both travel back and unleash hell on earth, and from there we follow Bruce Banner when he gets beamed back to earth in the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
I went through a lot of emotions and thoughts when watching this, the top one being terror. I am absolutely terrified of zombies, and I love Marvel heroes. So this episode was my nightmare made real in all the worst ways. This episode was pretty much the one everyone has been waiting for, even me. Other than heroes left alive and their teamwork to try and save the world, we get some great quotes and sad moments. From banter about Bucky not being sad about zombie Sam, to Bucky saying “sorry pal, I guess this is the end of the line”, to an incredibly dark twist that will leave you horrified. There’s no way you won’t love this episode, but also go into a downward spiral about what it all means for that universe’s non-existent future. There is one spark of hope that I’m happy they didn’t show us die (at least not yet), only leaving us with “Avenge us!”.
The greatest part of this episode is getting to hear Chadwick Boseman again in his role as Black Panther, and giving us some great advice (and has us missing him even more). Along with Boseman, we get everyone back voicing their own roles once again. All except Peter Parker and Steve Rogers. With four episodes left of the first season of What If…? You can catch up and be ready for the newest episode coming next Wednesday on Disney Plus.
What If…? is only available on Disney+ with new episodes premiering every Wednesday!
