Deep Cuts is a new 6 issue double length mini series brought to you by one of the minds behind Radiant Black. The series spans several storied decades of jazz lineage, with each issue featuring a new story, setting and artistic team showcasing the ties between the music and its influence on the culture as well as the impact it had on each new generation that has followed. A timeless tribute to one of America’s greatest pastimes and its roots.
Wow! It’s clear a lot of thought, effort and passion went into the creation of this mini-series. It’s a beautifully written homage to Jazz and its complex history. This book stretches beyond the comic world and would truly be enjoyed by Jazz lovers everywhere. It’s a love letter not just to the music itself but the movement as well. It’s one of those tales you imagine hearing sitting around a soda shop or outside on the porch with Grandpa on a sunny fall day. You know what you are hearing is just a story but there are also many lessons to be learned if you really listen! It’s a journey of hope, perseverance and courage and one that begs to be taken.
Jazz is the central theme here and it’s drawn in a way that you can almost hear it! The art is a history lesson in itself. The people, setting and style are pitch perfect for the times set around 1917 in New Orleans. It’s truly a sight to behold and it really puts you in the center of the story. The characters are drawn with detail and grace and the dialogue and tone also perfectly capture that era. It’s refreshing to see creators take a chance on something bold and inventive like this in a time where superhero books have nearly saturated much of the market. If you are looking for something new and different that also is grounded in reality this might just be music to your ears.
My rating 10/10 Superb!
