FISHFLIES #1 review – Terrifying and bleak but in classic Lemire fashion it also fills you with hope (Lemire, Wands, Lockard) Image Comics

Writer and Artist: Jeff Lemire
Letterer and Designer: Steve Wands
Editor: Greg Lockard

Thanks to Image Comics for the review copy!

A new mini-series from acclaimed writer Jeff Lemire of Sweet Tooth, Essex County, and Gideon Falls. Horror strikes a small peaceful town. When an armed robbery goes badly a small boy is left gravely injured and the town is changed forever. On the run, the fugitive bonds with a little girl who’s innocence and curiosity sets him on a path to redemption and the unknown.

Jeff Lemire has done it again. He’s a master at weaving together real life problems or situations with a little bit of fantasy. He’s able to pull the reader in and make them feel personally connected to his characters in ways you wouldn’t think were possible in this medium. It’s a true gift. Thankfully, one he continues to share with us at an almost astonishing pace. Here we are brought together to witness unspeakable horror in a small town. The sadness of it all, the guilt, the fear, it’s all portrayed flawlessly through his timely character sketches and art. It’s a story about death and rebirth. It’s also about innocence as a young girl befriends our antagonist and shares compassion that most adults wouldn’t be able to. The characters are well thought out and human. The setting is perfect. It’s about small town life but it also takes into account the bigger picture! What if we had a second chance? What if we could change our fate? It’s terrifying and bleak but in classic Lemire fashion it also fills you with hope. I think this first issue is about as perfect as we could expect and Lemire has really set the tone for what I believe will be a great journey moving forward.

My rating 10/10 – Superb!
