FISHFLIES #2 review – A must read if you are a Lemire fan (Lemire, Wands, Lockard) Image Comics

Writer and Artist: Jeff Lemire
Letterer and Designer: Steve Wands
Editor: Greg Lockard

Thanks to Image Comics for the review copy!

The second emotional chapter in this bigger than life mini-series from creator Jeff Lemire. The town continues to investigate the unfortunate shooting of young Paul Dupois as the suspect remains on the loose. Meanwhile, little Franny Fox continues to make acquaintances with her new friend as they explore the nearby forest looking for a safe haven.

Lemire is just a master of his domain. The unique spin he’s able to put on such emotional and heartfelt stories continues to take the comic world by storm. He’s able to take the most mundane or simplest of ideas and completely turn them into a thought-provoking meditation on life and its trivialities. The second issue of Fishflies continues to tug at your heartstrings. The innocence of little Franny Fox and her fascination with the unbeknownst murder, now turned Fishfly, is a wonderful revelation on non-judgement and second chances. It’s an unlikely bond that continues to grow while the rest of the town continues to fear the potential death of Paul Dupois, and his shooter. At this juncture, we don’t yet know if there will really be any second chances for Lee but we are already starting to believe that his relationship with young Franny might be his redemption in the first place. In a way, they are very much the same and through him Franny clearly has found new meaning, friendship and joy in her life. Overall this was a great issue. It doesn’t advance the plot a whole lot but it does build on the relationship between Franny and Lee the Fishfly which is central to the narrative. This series is a must read if you are a Lemire fan or just looking to read something a little deeper and a little more connected than the typical fare on the shelves today.

My rating: 10/10 Superb!!
