Before receiving GLOW #1 I didn’t know anything about the story or the related Netflix show. I heard about the book from my friend Tim (you can read an article he wrote here!) so I wanted to give it a try. I’m so so happy that I did! I had a great time reading this story, and it had some moments that made me truly laugh out loud.

If you, like me, know nothing about GLOW, it features a crew of lady wrestlers who take the performance aspect seriously. These Gorgeous-Ladies-Of-Wrestling take on some fun and funny challenges in issue #1.

The issue picks up during a slow week for the crew. Just when they think they have a weekend off, they are roped into raising money for an event none of them signed up for! Each of the wrestlers finds their own way to raise the money and they hit the road together, for better or worse! When the gorgeous ladies arrive at their destination, they find out they’ll be facing a much larger and scarier task than raising $75 for a road trip.

GLOW is a beautifully drawn book, which a simple and heartwarming vibe. There were a few moments that I felt like I didn’t understand, possibly because I haven’t watched the show, but I still fell for these characters. I’m excited to see them all in action, and I really hope that donut makes more appearances. I’m not even going to spoil it, read issue #1 so you can meet donut, seriously.

Going back to the art, I love the clean lines and bright colors. It just feels like the 80s and made me think of other properties I love like Steven Universe and Lumberjanes. If you enjoy that art style, you will no doubt love the look of GLOW.

I’m so glad I had the opportunity to pick up this book, and I’m really looking forward to seeing where the story goes. I’m hoping for some gender subverting, patriarchy smashing, great moments.

GLOW #1 is now available.
