Thanks to Suspicious Behavior Productions for the review copy!
This series is about a planet of alien wrestlers who invade earth because a down on his luck pro wrestler taped a pizza box where a championship belt would be and declared himself the Champion of the Galaxy. I’m going to write a variation of that introduction every time I review this because its sheer silliness makes me smile.
This issue starts with a flashback to Rory Landell’s youth, which gives a little context for where he is today. And where is that? Down on his luck and soon to be right smack in the middle of an alien invasion caused by his boast many years earlier. From the cage around the earth to the folding chair to the head, this issue incorporates more hallmarks of professional wrestling that even non-wrestling fans will recognize. Readers should also take time to inspect all the wrestling moves employed by the invaders, as some of them are quite funny.
The writing remains sharp in issue 2. Once again, a monologue by Rory gives readers a chance to try out their best wrestling voice to read along (as does the boss alien named Manifest Destiny). This issue is more family friendly, lacking the curse words and adult content of the first. While it is possible we may never see them again, I thought the observatory scientists in this issue were funny. One thing I am appreciating about the art in this series is the character design, even minor characters are given enough attention to make them distinguishable.
There isn’t a recap or story so far page, but if you can read the title, you pretty much know what is going on. Starting with this issue might be a good option for someone wanting to read this comic with their children.
