What you are about to hear is a review from someone who is insane, because that’s all I can be after watching this movie and listening to the album on repeat.
KPop Demon Hunters dropped on Netflix on Friday, June 20th and the world will never be the same again. The movie is about a famous K-pop girl group called HUNT/X, with three members, Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. They sing and also fight demons, with their singing they are able to strengthen the barrier kept in place through the generations (many other singing girl groups through the eras have also done this) to keep the demons locked away (though they do slip through now and again to steal souls). This time, right before they are able to renew the barrier for the year, the demons have come up with a new plan, a demon boy band group. The group is called the Saja Boys, their first big hit is Soda Pop (very catchy), and the group consists of five demon members. The leader is Jinu, and the other members are Romance, Baby, Abby, and Mystery. They are very dreamy, and the fans cannot resist them (a good way to steal souls), and HUNT/X is also having a hard time resisting the guys as well.
You can tell a lot of work, research, and love went into the making of this movie, because there is no way that this is a one off. Fans have already made the movie number one on Netflix in multiple countries; the soundtrack is already trending (the music is so good). Everyone hopes to hear some good news soon about a sequel and prequels, and the cosplay is just ramping up as well. It has been a blast the past few days watching the fandom grow (a birth of a fandom is a wild and wonderful thing to watch), and I have been eating up the fanart and edits being made. I am seriously dying to get my hands on merch for every single one of the characters and anything made about the songs.
The storyline itself is a lot of fun; it is a funny movie and action packed. But the main undertones and the main messaging are beautiful. Accepting all parts of yourself, accepting others for who they are, not everything is black and white or good or evil, and found family. The more you watch the movie, the more I bet you will see. There were just so many moments that pulled on my heart and that’s before any kind of romance was introduced! There are a few romance plotlines in the story, one is obviously the main one (I’m not going to spoil it), but they are all super cute and very funny. Though, I will say the main romance and anything to do with Rumi and Jinu will have you in tears in the worst and best ways as they face their past and fears.
I need to now rant about the music we got in this movie, so many incredible songs and I just need more. I want posters, music videos, and actual albums to stare at all day long. Below I’m adding in my ranking of the songs featured in the film and is on the album you can obsess over on Spotify.
- Free
- Your Idol
- What it sounds like
- Golden
- Soda Pop
- Take Down
- How it’s Done
- Jinu songs in the demon realm (no actual title or full song, but we want and need it, and then it will be higher on the list)
Since Friday morning after watching the movie for the first time, I have been listening to these songs nonstop and singing along at the top of my lungs. I have also been bugging everyone I know to watch the movie as soon as they can (mainly so I can have someone to gush over it with) and talk about how much fanfic is currently being written for the movie. I’ve also started work on cosplays I could do of characters from the movie and who else I know can pull in with me.
I will also say that when you watch each of the songs being performed in the movie, watch them twice. There are little easter eggs, and the choreography is some of the best I have seen in any animated film or K-pop group. It’s also very mesmerizing to watch the dances and fall even harder for the Saja Boys, I’d give them my soul right now if I could (I would be so dead very quickly as soon as they started singing). Ugh, I could go on forever about the songs, characters, animation, and storyline… but I’ll try and wrap it up here for now.
When I say go watch KPop Demon Hunters, I mean it aggressively for this movie because you really don’t want to miss out on the hype and you’ll also be bopping along with the music just like the rest of us. You can now stream (and download) KPop Demon Hunters on Netflix and listen to the album on Spotify.
