What it’s about: Lore is an old school British anthology style film created as a love letter to classic horror. When four friends book a horror themed camping experience led by a creepy guide they are asked to think of their scariest and spookiest story to tell around the fire. As they each spill the details they begin to learn that these stories will somehow impact them in the real world and have deadly consequences for them all.
What Corey Thought: Lore is that rare treat that keeps on giving with not just one fright but four different and original stories. It’s a tightly woven bit of storytelling that you don’t come across often in today’s horrorscape. It’s hard enough to come up with something original and entertaining as one cohesive story but to be able to sell a few short stories as part of a single narrative and make them all entertaining in some way is quite the feat! I’m not sure I’ve seen something as creative since Trick ‘r Treat back in 2007! That’s almost 20 years! Oh, and it’s narrated and led by one of my favorite actors today in Richard Brake! Is there anyone on this planet that pulls off creepy better than him?? This guy is severely underappreciated! He steals the show and really helps to set the overall tone for the whole anthology.
Each story is effectively different and they all represent their own horror style or theme. There are some good jump scares, a few laughs, and definitely some gnarly monster and gore effects. The actors do a good job of selling the narrative and working within the constraints of the story. Especially given this is not a big budget production. I can only imagine what these directors might do with that! They are also not very long stories but each is developed and scripted enough to sell their own unique vision. Overall, while each story might not be perfect there are some really solid ideas and frights here. A hardcore horror fan would be hard pressed to find something as engaging and interesting this Halloween season. Just like the story suggests, this anthology might be the perfect to take in with a group of friends with the lights out and a big bowl of popcorn!
