METALOCALYPSE: ARMY OF THE DOOMSTAR review – Very funny, full of action and plenty gory

Directors: Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha
Starring: Brendon Small, Tommy Blacha, Mark Hamill, Victor Brandt, and Malcolm McDowell
Movie Length: 1 hour 23 minutes

What it’s about: Dethklok is back in a new full length animated feature and direct sequel to the 2013 Adult Swim special, Metalocalypse: The Doomstar Requiem. With the predestined Metalocalypse closing in, the fate of mankind now lies solely in Dethklok’s hands. The band must write and perform the “Song of Salvation” on the world stage before it’s too late!

What Corey Thought: After several years on hiatus I was happy to see Dethklok come back for more! While I happily grinned ear to ear upon the announcement they were returning, it was like they never left. Not only did they not miss a beat but the creators brought a lot of ideas and storylines that had popped up earlier in the series to fruition.

The Metalocalypse has been fully realized and it’s much trippier and heartfelt than we could have ever imagined. The band comes full circle when leader Nathan Explosion realizes it’s the fans that are truly The Army of the Doomstar and “The Great Reuniting” is what really ends up saving the world. While it’s ultimately very funny, full of action and plenty gory, there is more than meets the eye here! In truth, there may be a lesson we can all learn from this movie. It was Aristotle who said “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts…” and I think that’s the major lesson to be taken from this. It’s truly a gift to the fans!

Led by some trippy animation and the awesome voice work of a huge cast of actors and musical legends, the show has never felt more fresh. Even in 2023 it’s still as clever and funny as it always was. With its unapologetic brand of humor and a storyline that’s totally metal, it’s bound to be a big hit for Adult Swim and its creative team as summer comes to a close. It’s bittersweet to see these characters and stories come to a close. If nothing else, we were lucky to have this awesome and swan song as a means to say goodbye.

Brightwood is now available on VOD platforms.

My Rating: A+
