The Convention Collective: How did you get into art/why did you want to become an artist?
Chris Oz Fulton: I’ve drawn my whole life. My biggest influence has to be the cover art on my mom’s books when I was a kid. She always had stacks of Horror, Sci-fi and Fantasy books laying around. Lots of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, [J.R.R.] Tolkien, and Stephen King. Those covers always asked questions. Questions that I had to know the answers to.
TCC: What artists inspire you?
Chris: First and foremost always [Frank] Frazetta. Bernie Wrightson, James O’Barr, H.R. Giger, Barry Windsor Smith, Mark A. Nelson, Jeff Easley, [Gerald] Brom, and Drew Struzan. There are so many more, but these are my go to guys.
TCC: Tell us your greatest fanboy moment!
Chris: Wow that’s tough one. But it’s gotta be having a beer with Bernie Wrightson, Mark A Nelson, Len Wein, and Simon Bisley. I’ve had a lot of adventures and experiences traveling all over the country and doing hundreds of conventions. But I don’t think much could top that.
TCC: Who is your favorite comic book character/movie/tv character (any fandom)?
Chris: Wolverine, and Roland Deschain
Chris: Horror. Any Horror. Comics, books, movies, TV. All of it in any form.
TCC: What characters do you like drawing the most?
Chris: Anything creepy macabre eerie ghoulish. Horror
TCC: What projects are you working on right now? Do you have any projects coming up you’d like to mention?
Chris: I just finished up two projects I can’t talk much about yet. But if you like Horror or Sci-fi movies stay tuned. I’m currently working on an oddities and curiosities series that I’m having a lot of fun with. My dream project (that I can never get enough time to work on) is an anthology horror/fantasy graphic novel following the exploits of a ghastly cabal of loveable characters.
TCC: When you’re drawing, what do you use for background noise? Some artists use music, some use a tv show that they just can listen to. What do you use?
Chris: I listen to music. Mostly scores. Lots of Jeremy Soule, Akira Yamaoka, Matt Uelmen, Javier Navarrete, Alexandre Desplat, and Danny Elfman.
TCC: With the lack of conventions a lot of artists are doing commissions and sending them out to people, are you as well? Where can people see an example of your art?
Chris: I do when I have time. You can always keep up with what I’m working on via my Instagram page. It’s my name ChrisOzFulton. I randomly do sketch covers and throw them up on my eBay.
Thanks for your time Chris!
