THE BOYS – Season 2 Episodes 2 and 3 – ‘A Whale of a good time’

Season Two of Amazon Prime’s THE BOYS opened with the first three episodes being made available at once. I reviewed Episode 1 on its own and since 2 and 3 were also made available, I’ll give a spoiler free review of these two episodes together. After that, I’ll return to weekly reviews as the rest of the season releases.

As was the case last season, THE BOYS isn’t afraid to kill people off in big (and graphic) ways, and the premiere did not disappoint in that area. At the end of the episode, as expected, Butcher (Karl Urban) rejoined Hughie and the gang allowing the season to begin in earnest.

Episodes two and three pick up on three main threads. Surprisingly, a lot of time is spent with The Deep. I’m still not sure whether the writers see him more as comedy relief or if he is going to have a bigger arc, but he is definitely fleshed out more as a character in these episodes. This gives the writers more options for future episodes.

The episodes also continues our introduction to Stormfont, the newest member of The Seven. While her sassy demeanor and I don’t care attitude is refreshing and the source of many of the episodes’ humor, it does get to the point where I started to wonder why Vought selected her for the team in the first place. That minor quibble aside, she is set up to be a major player for the rest of the season.

Finally, these episodes are a great showcase for Kimiko (credited as “The Female”). Her character is mute, making it a real challenge to give her a personality. Her arc in these episodes really provided Kimiko some powerful scenes and Karen Fukahara delivers an amazing acting performance given the fact that she is unable to speak. While her powers seem similar to Marvel’s Wolverine, these episodes go a long way to making her an original character.

THE BOYS continues to feature excellent special effects to depict the superpower mayhem. Episode 3 in particular had one of the best chase sequences that I’ve seen in a long time. I recommend starting with Season 1 as many of the big reveals in these episodes relate to events from last season, but if you would rather jump in immediately, you can read my Season 1 recap.

Random Spoiler Free Musings:

  1. What is the deal with Fresca?  Is there a product placement deal with the beverage or will some deeper meaning be revealed?
  2. I highly recommend you pay attention to Mother’s Milk’s t-shirts.  They are consistently excellent.
  3. I’ve been trying to figure out if “THE BOYS” refer to the Seven or the regular guys trying to take them down.
  4. Kudos to Antony Starr for making Homelander creepy while maintaining his magnetic public persona.

Season 2’s first three episodes will premiere on September 4th. New episodes will then air once a week until the season finale on October 9th.
