What it’s about: The Coffee Table is about a couple, Jesus and Maria, who appear to be in a rut with their marriage while dealing with their first and newborn child. When Jesus randomly decides to purchase the ugliest and gaudiest coffee table ever in spite of his controlling wife he sets forth an event that will change their lives forever and bring closure to that wise old adage that “The wife always knows best.” Just not exactly like you’d think!
What Corey thought: Wow! I really enjoyed this movie! I wasn’t sure what to expect and it turned into one of the most intense and unsettling movies I’ve seen this year. It was darkly funny, at times kinda scary and extremely tense!! I was glued to the screen wondering what the hell was going to happen next. Caye Casas appears to be a director and writer to watch as he’s really brought life and imagination to this thought provoking film. The tone, dialogue, the irony, just thrusting you deeper and deeper into the psyche and lives of the characters on the screen. The tone flips on a dime too! I went from laughing out loud back in my chair to literally sitting on the edge of my seat biting my nails. David Pareja and Estefania de los Santos are brilliant in their roles as both lend raw and unsettling emotional heft to their characters. The chemistry and the tension between them is palpable.
It’s a roller coaster ride of emotions that you won’t want to miss! The score and soundtrack are also both really well done as they add another layer of depth and at times, anxiety, to the film. If I had to pick two films way out in right field that this kinda reminded me of it would be Very Bad Things and Parasite. I’ll leave you all to figure out why! As I said I just really enjoyed everything about this film and I look forward to seeing what Caye Casas comes up with next!
