TRANSFORMERS #1 Review – A must read book for any prior fan of the Transformers (Johnson, Spicer, Wooton) Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment

Writer and Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson
Colorist: Mike Spicer
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publication Designer: Andres Juarez
Editor: Sean Mackiewicz

Thanks to Image Comics and Skybound Entertainment for the review copy!

The Transformers are back in one of the biggest books of the year. Superstar Daniel Warren Johnson takes his swing at this beloved 80’s franchise and the second series based directly in the Energon Universe (after Void Rivals). Crash-landing on earth a new war between the Autobots and Decepticons is forged.

Wow! The nostalgia is real! A promising new beginning to one of my favorite childhood pleasures. I’ve long been a fan of Daniel Warren Johnson and Do A Powerbomb, also from Image, was probably my favorite book of 2022. When I heard he was taking over writing the new Transformers series I couldn’t have been more excited. He did not disappoint!

The first issue of Transformers is fresh, exhilarating and dramatic in all the best ways. The characters have never felt more real and alive to me. The dialogue and story builds such great momentum right out of the gate and the tone of the story has more heft and grit than ever before. It’s as if he’s taken the very foundation of what was there and completely rebuilt it into something with greater stakes and more consequences.

The complete issue was engaging from start to finish and It ended in a way that left me both shook and excited to see what would come next. The art with its trademark DWJ look is just breathtaking! It’s raw, detailed and full of emotion. The colors add several dimensions to the art which helped bring the pages to life and add greater depth to each panel. It’s just really a perfect debut issue! There are even a couple surprises in there. This is a must read book for any prior fan of the Transformers or Daniel Warren Johnson in general. If you are new to the franchise now is a great time to jump in. Readers Roll Out!!!

My rating – 10/10 Superb!!
