Chainsaw Man manga comes to an end

Another huge shonen series has ended, and of course everyone has an opinion on the ending. I feel like with each new ending for bigger and popular series-no one is super happy with the endings. We saw this with Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, and My Hero Academia. Sadly, Chainsaw Man is not able to escape this scrutiny either.

The Chainsaw Man series was about a young boy Denji and his dog (who was actually a Devil, the chainsaw one) Pochita. Only relying on each other as they are extremely poor, one day they merge together and Denji becomes Chainsaw Man. From there gory adventures ensue as Denji tries to live a life he has always dreamed of with Pochita, being normal and getting a girlfriend (cause boobs).

Now, on to the spoiler half of this review article. Basically for the big climatic part Denji is once again inside his mind on the brink of death talking with Pochita. He decides that if he had never been in Denji’s life, it might not have turned out so bad for Denji, and then eats himself to erase the existence and memories (basically going back in time to where the story starts). So, Denji dies where the manga starts, it’s just Power that saves him in a way by making him her slave. It also shows a lot of people are no longer dead, thank god Makima does not come back. We follow as Denji kind of goes through his life as Power’s slave as a zombie and helping her to kill devils, with a chainsaw might I add. This is an alright ending in my book, it fits the storyline and the author (he’s pretty weird). But, the only issue I had with this ending is not seeing Aki and Angel (maybe they are alive and just far away and living happy-ish lives).

From this, people have been pretty ticked off about the ending, feeling like it’s almost a non-ending or that the author just didn’t know how to end it. The only thing I can really say about this ending, is that it’s fine. It’s not as bad as some other endings we have gotten in the past, or how the author has ended some of the arc’s in Chainsaw Man (absolutely devastating every time). Although, I do hope that when the anime catches up to the manga and finishes the series, that they add in their own little details to slightly alter the ending in their own way. That way fans might have more closure and come to accept the ending (and have better feelings for the series that way as well). Kind of like how the anime for Attack on Titan changed some of the dialogue which really made the difference for the conclusion for the series (the author was okay with it as well and it helped him have his own closure with the series and fans).

If you haven’t had a chance to hop on the Chainsaw Man bandwagon, now might be the time since the manga has officially come to an end. The anime is also doing better than ever, with the most recent arc being made into a movie and crushing box office records for anime movies. You can catch the Chainsaw Man anime on Crunchyroll now and the manga in bookstores or on the Shonen Jump mobile app.
