MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE review – Great action filled Summer Blockbuster

Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Starring: Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Czerny
Movie Length: 2 hour 43 minutes

What is it: The next chapter in the saga of IMF Agent Ethan Hunt, this movie is the first part of a two part chapter that sees the IMF team trying to stop an A.I. type entity.

What Dan thought: Whether you like or dislike Tom Cruise, this movie delivers on all fronts. The action scenes including the a fight on top of a moving train, and a motorcycle jump off a large cliff were both non-CGI. In the case of the jump scene (see the making of it below), Cruise himself did it.

From the beginning of the movie when we are first introduced to the entity, to the final scene which sets up part two of this chapter, it’s a non-stop action packed movie for just under 3 hours.

The cast includes the returning Ving Rhames’ Luther, Simon Pegg’s Benji, as well as newcomers to the M:I universe including a couple of stars from the MCU in Haley Atwell and, Pom Klementieff both were outstanding in their roles. A few other actors who haven’t been seen in the M:I movies recently make their return as well.

But back to the movie itself, the action, stunts, and fighting scenes were what you’d expect from a Mission: Impossible movie thanks to Stunt Coordinator Wade Eastwood and Fight Coordinator Wolfgang Stegemann.

Dan’s grade: A. If you want a great summer blockbuster type movie that is filled with great action scenes, this is the movie you’ll want to see. Oh and if you have a chance, see it in IMAX or Dolby Cinema (I saw it in Dolby Cinema, and it was outstanding both for the picture and the surround sound setup).

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One opens on July 8th, 2023 in Europe and July 12th, 2023 in the US.
