WHAT IT’S ABOUT: A new mother experiences severe postpartum after the birth of her first born child and her life starts to spiral out of control.
WHAT COREY THOUGHT: You will not look at your wife the same ever again! Nor will you doubt her strength and courage. What an intriguing, tense, and anxiety filled thriller. It’s a horror movie on the outside but when you look behind the veil the true horror lies in it’s informative look at postpartum and the pain, peril, and isolation that a new mother often can go through after child birth. Emily Hampshire plays the lead here and her dedication to the role is truly astounding. Her performance is bold and undeniably sobering. In fact, her performance might be one of the best I’ve seen thus far this year in any movie or genre. You can’t help but feel for her as she continues to lose grip on her life and her sanity. Her struggle to make her family and friends believe her. Her struggle to carry on when her will to live has more or less diminished. O’Brien’s fantastic direction helps all the characters, but especially Hampshire and Arnaud, to live outside of the screen and draw you right into the suffocating tension and hopelessness of the situation. As the story progresses into the extreme side of postpartum you can’t help but wonder if all of this could have been avoided with a little less ignorance and naivety. Nonetheless the conclusion hits with a thud and it appears our main character is damned to witness the whole tragedy and experience over and over again. That’s how madness works when left unchecked. However, will anyone ever know if they aren’t even paying attention? Check this one out on demand today!
