Director: Robert Eggers
Starring: Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe
Movie Length: 2 hours 12 minutes
What it’s about: Writer/Director Robert Eggers’ remake of 1922’s Nosferatu, which got it’s inspiration from Bram Stoker‘s 1897 novel Dracula.
Dan’s thoughts: Wow. Going into the movie I had seen a few of Eggers’ previous movies (The Northman, The Lighthouse) and enjoyed them. This movie blew me away, from the cinematography (done by Jarin Blaschke who has worked w/ Eggers before) and the editing (Louise Ford who like Jarin, has worked w/ Eggers previously), to the costumes for a movie set in the 1830s (Linda Muir who…well you get the idea), and the score which helped set the tone for a lot of the scenes and kept the movie going (from Robin Carolan, who worked with Eggers on The Northman).
Of course we need to talk about the acting as well. Skarsgård absolutely nailed the role as Count Orlok (what can you say, the guy is great in villain roles). Hoult and Depp as the Hutters (based on Stoker’s Jonathan and Mina Harker) were excellent (also, Hoult in yet another Dracula inspired movie, was fun). And of course, Dafoe (who played a guy playing Orlok in 2000’s Shadow of the Vampire) as Prof. Albin Eberhart Von Franz, an expert in alchemy, mysticism and the occult who is based on Stoker’s Abraham Van Helsing was a blast to see (you can tell he was having fun in the role).
The movie does as a couple jump scares, and a bit of gore (it is a horror movie after all), but nothing that was too over the top so be warned if those are not your things.
Dan’s score: 4.5 out of 5. It’s easy to see why this movie has been nominated (and won some) for a lot of awards including score, costumes, and cinematography. It’s easily one of my favorite movies of 2024. So if you want to see a movie that is not your typical horror or action movie, this is it.
Nosferatu is now in theaters
