REVIEW: THE FORGOTTEN QUEEN #1 Review – When the !@#$ am I?

THE FORGOTTEN QUEEN Written by Tini Howard, Art by Amilcar Pinna

A copy of Issue #1 of The Forgotten Queen was provided by Valiant Comics for review.

My expectations for this comic can really be summed up by one glance at that cover art. Kick-ass lady with a battle axe. I don’t need to know any more than that. The titular queen wrecks havoc across 2 time periods in this first issue. While this laid the groundwork for what I believe will be a fascinating story, I found myself a bit perplexed at the plotting.

The main problem I faced while reading this, was that I had to reread it several times. I was thrown by some jumps in time and jumps in logic. The action sequences were sometimes odd. It was difficult to connect the dots of momentum from one panel to the next. The writer chose to use special characters to bleep out expletives, and I also found that distracting. All that being said, when I could piece together what was presented, I really enjoyed it.

I thought the artwork was beautiful, and I love the details in the faces. I also appreciate the attention to perspective, especially during dialogue. Pinna made it a point to show when a character is looking up or down at the person they’re speaking to. It gave the conversation more depth, and conveyed a sense of hierarchy without saying anything.

After reading, my expectations are possibly even higher than they were initially. I’m excited to dig more into the powers and abilities that Vexana possesses. She is a force for be reckoned with, and she certainly knows it. It’s not entirely clear what is happening in one of the 2 time periods in issue #1, so I’m hoping for some clarification there in #2.

The first issue of the four part mini-series goes on sale February 27th.
