Thanks to Mad Cave Studios for the review copy!
A new horror/sci-fi series from Mad Cave about a mourning family and their venture to spread their deceased father’s ashes and put the past behind them. When they arrive in the mountains, far away from civilization, they are met with unknown trials and tribulations that will test their strength and bring their family closer together than ever before.
Mad Cave continues to push out inventive and groundbreaking series from some fantastic creative teams and Morning Star is the perfect example. If you are tired of the usual fare from DC and Marvel you’d be hard pressed to find much better or more original stories than what’s coming out of this publisher.
This particular series has a cool sci-fi/horror vibe that revolves around a small family. It’s set in the wilderness and mountains of Montana which instantly gives you that anxious feeling of being helpless and alone. It’s gorgeously drawn and colored with a bit of an early 60’s/70’s vibe like it was ripped out of some Buck Rodgers or Lost in Space comic. It just has a real vintage look and feel and I really thought it was fitting for this story. Daniels and Andry have created a thoughtful and personal story about love, loss and the perseverance of family. While we don’t know exactly where this story is going yet after one issue it’s clear that it’s going to be some type of harrowing and spiritual journey that will test this family to its limit. It’s a faster paced read that will surprise you as you reach the final pages. In the end, they will either survive and be stronger for it or fatefully disappear in the mountains never to be seen again. If you are into original and thought-provoking mysteries this might be one to keep on your radar. I look forward to keeping up with this series and seeing how it all plays out.
My review – 8//0 Great!
